Being livestock farmers and butchers we are undeniably (and unashamedly) carnivorous in our attitude, but ...man cannot live by chops alone. So we have stuffed our farm shop full of goodies we want to eat. Whilst we make a huge amount ourselves in the onsite kitchen (breads, pies, chutneys, jams, pickles, pastry, anything else we fancy) what we cannot make we seek to source from within 30 miles. Ok, so we may stock limes for your obligatory G&T whilst cooking the roast and we believe there are certain iconic foods that can’t be done without-Heinz ketchup and Gentleman’s Relish, are two that fall into this category. But you certainly shan’t find a New Zealand born apple or Peruvian asparagus. If it can be grown in the local area then we’ll stock it...in season of course.
Fruit and veg come from a number of sources. First and foremost we have our own veg garden, which you can see at the pub. The 50 yards it has to travel to get to the shop means it can be picked and on the shelf in about 20 minutes-now I may be biased but I think you’d struggle to find much fresher in any other shop. We use Secretts in Milford, especially for their salad leaves. We also have an arrangement with The Grange, a Bookham based charity with a two acre veg garden that grow the most wonderful things! And last, but certainly not least, are the locals!
Over the past few years we have pioneered a scheme whereby locals bring us their surplus home grown fruit and veg and we exchange it for some meat or a few beers. The uptake has been staggering and next time you come in you could be gnawing on Freddie’s radishes or Martin’s beetroot. And if you have grown too much of anything, come in and see if we can do a bit of a deal.
A large range of bread and cakes are made on the premises- they smell, look and taste home-made, because they are! Like all our food, they are made with the same ingredients you would use at home, but we have taken the hard work out of it for you.
Our pies have become legendary in the area- full to the brim with slow-cooked meat and vegetables, steeped in stock or wine. Our kitchen chefs create a different meal every day, so if you want some inspiration or fancy a night in without cooking, let us cook for you. The meals range from lasagne and shepherds pie, to lamb curry or coq au vin....with a fine selection of accompaniments, such as dauphinoise or boulangère potatoes. Quality, wholesome food you can happily feed your family- no hidden nasties or preservatives.
